Clifton Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Woman Seriously Injured in Stabbing

Police say a 62-year-old Clifton resident suffered life-threatening injuries after being stabbed in the neck and head, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Clifton, NJ – A Clifton man has been charged with attempted murder after authorities say he stabbed a 62-year-old resident, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Clifton Police Department announced Monday that Anthony C. Schwiederek was arrested Friday following the investigation into the stabbing.

Victim hospitalized with life-threatening injuries

Officers responded to a residence in Clifton on Friday after receiving a report of a stabbing. When police arrived, they found the victim suffering from stab wounds to the neck and head.

The victim was transported to a hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities said the victim’s identity is being withheld under New Jersey’s Prevention of Domestic Violence Act.

Investigators identified Schwiederek as the person responsible for the stabbing and charged him with first-degree attempted murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

Prosecutors seek pretrial detention

Schwiederek remains in custody, and prosecutors have filed a motion seeking his pretrial detention. A Superior Court judge will decide whether he will remain jailed while the case proceeds.

If convicted, Schwiederek faces 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison on the attempted murder charge. Under the No Early Release Act, he would be required to serve 85% of any sentence before becoming eligible for parole, followed by five years of parole supervision.
