Connellsville man charged with attempted homicide after shooting outside Planet Fitness

EAST HUNTINGDON TWP., Pa. – A Connellsville man is facing attempted homicide charges after police say he shot another man multiple times Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of a Planet Fitness in Westmoreland County.

Pennsylvania State Police said troopers were called to the Crossroads Plaza lot in East Huntingdon Township on January 13 after multiple 911 calls reported a shooting victim. The suspect fled the scene in a black Ford truck before officers arrived.

The victim, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital and was able to identify Steven Heald of Connellsville as the shooter, according to investigators. Surveillance footage from the area confirmed witness statements and helped troopers link the suspect’s truck to Heald.

As police were preparing to go to his residence, Heald reportedly turned himself in at the Connellsville Police Department, where he was taken into custody by state police.

Authorities said the investigation remains active and additional charges may be filed.
