BALTIMORE, Md. — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took custody of a Guatemalan national convicted of attempted murder after his release from a Maryland state prison, ICE officials announced this week.

On March 31, ICE officers arrested Edvin Giovanni Ceron-Reyes, 37, in Cumberland, Maryland, after his transfer from the Western Correctional Institution. Ceron, a Guatemalan citizen, had been convicted of two counts of attempted first-degree murder by the Howard County Circuit Court in January 2012 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Ceron was originally arrested by the Howard County Police Department on July 7, 2011. On the same day, ICE lodged an immigration detainer, which was honored upon his release. A final order of removal was issued against Ceron on September 13, 2013.

ICE continues criminal public safety role

“The apprehension of this convicted attempted murderer demonstrates the critical role that immigration enforcement plays in protecting our communities,” said Acting ICE Baltimore Field Office Director Nikita Baker.

Ceron will remain in ICE custody as removal proceedings to Guatemala are finalized.
