A juvenile with a knife triggered a police response that ended with a shot fired and an internal review underway.

SCHENECTADY, NY — A Schenectady police officer fired a shot during an encounter with an armed juvenile Wednesday evening after responding to reports of an altercation at a residence on Strong Street, police said.

At approximately 7:21 p.m., officers arrived at 1007 Strong Street and found a female juvenile holding a large knife. Officers attempted to communicate with her and called in crisis negotiators, according to a statement from the department.

While officers were on scene, the girl began approaching them with the knife in hand. In response, one officer discharged a single round that did not strike the individual.

The juvenile was later transported to an area hospital with what police described as self-inflicted injuries to her arm. Those injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Investigation ongoing by Schenectady police

The Schenectady Police Department said the incident is under active investigation by detectives and the Office of Professional Standards. No further information has been released, and no charges or arrests were announced.

The department did not identify the juvenile or the officer involved in the incident.

“The incident is under investigation by detectives and the department’s Office of Professional Standards,” officials said in the release.
