Coyote Attacks on Dogs in Connecticut Prompts Police Advisory

April 29, 2024

WESTPORT, CT — The Westport Police Department has issued a coyote advisory following several recent attacks on dogs in the area. Thankfully, these attacks were not fatal. To prevent further incidents, residents are advised to supervise their pets closely while outdoors, especially in their yards, as coyotes tend to avoid humans.

Residents walking their pets at night should carry a powerful flashlight and remain vigilant. Effective deterrents include using high-decibel whistles or air-horns and throwing objects like balls, sticks, or rocks at the coyotes. If confronted by a coyote while with a small pet, it is recommended to pick up the pet and maintain a safe distance, keeping the coyote in sight while retreating noisily and assertively.

Homeowners are encouraged to secure their yards with fences that are effective against wildlife, noting that deer fences may not prevent coyote entry. Installing motion-sensitive lights can also help deter coyotes at night. Pets under 30 pounds are particularly vulnerable, though larger pets can also be at risk and benefit from supervision.

Coyotes are widespread across North America and pose minimal risk to humans, with only two fatal attacks recorded in the last century. However, they remain a significant threat to pets. Available resources for protection include the U.S. Navy-issue 130-decibel Storm Whistle, Frontiersman Bear Horn, and Mace-brand Canine Repellent.
