NEWARK, N.J. — Newark Public Safety officials are asking for the public’s help identifying a man wanted in connection with a sexual assault reported Wednesday morning near Elizabeth Avenue and Vanderpool Street.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr., the incident occurred around 9:18 a.m. when a woman walking in the area was approached by an unknown male who touched her buttocks before fleeing eastbound on Vanderpool Street.

Detectives described the suspect as a Black male, approximately 20 to 25 years old, standing between 5’3″ and 5’6″ tall, weighing 120 to 145 pounds, with black hair. A surveillance image of the suspect was shared by the Department of Public Safety on social media.

Authorities have not released any additional details on the ongoing investigation but are urging community members to assist by providing any relevant information.

“Anyone with information regarding the identity of these suspects [is asked] to call the Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS,” Miranda said in the official release. All tips remain confidential and may lead to a reward.

The department continues its efforts to locate and apprehend the individual involved in the case.
