A morning bomb threat prompted a full lockdown and evacuation of Allegany High School before investigators determined there was no active danger.
Cumberland, MD – Allegany High School was secured and students safely evacuated Friday morning after a telephone threat triggered a rapid, multi-agency law enforcement response, according to the Cumberland Police Department.
The threat was reported at approximately 7:29 a.m., prompting officers to arrive within minutes and secure the building to protect students and staff.
Police said the department’s CERT Team conducted a comprehensive sweep of the school and successfully cleared the building while investigators worked to identify those responsible.
Investigation leads authorities out of state
During the investigation, officials identified a group believed to be responsible for making the threat and determined they were located outside Maryland.

Controlled evacuation and multi-agency response
Following the security sweep, officials initiated a controlled release of students from the rear of the building, identified as the safest exit point. Students were then transported to Allegany College of Maryland in line with established emergency procedures.
Police credited school staff and multiple partner agencies for their coordinated response, including the Cumberland Fire Department, Maryland State Police, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, and other emergency services.
The investigation into the source of the threat remains ongoing.
