Cyclist Fatally Injured in Collision with NJ State Police Vehicle in Hackettstown Identified

Trenton, NJ – The Attorney General’s Office has released the identity of the cyclist who was fatally injured in a collision with a New Jersey State Police vehicle in Hackettstown on February 5. The deceased has been identified as 59-year-old Raul L. Diaz of Long Valley, New Jersey.

The incident occurred shortly after 6 AM when Sergeant First Class Kesene Grier, operating an unmarked NJSP SUV, collided with Diaz on Willow Grove Street near Brook Hollow Drive. Diaz was transported to Hackettstown Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:17 AM. The circumstances of the crash are currently under investigation.

This investigation is conducted in accordance with Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which mandates the Attorney General’s Office to oversee the investigation of any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement or while in custody, ensuring transparency and accountability in these incidents.
