August 30, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Wayne David, a 26-year veteran of the force, who died in the line of duty on August 28, 2024. Officer David was fatally wounded in a tragic incident that occurred while he and other officers were attempting to recover a discarded firearm in Northeast D.C.

The events unfolded around 5:40 p.m. when officers noticed a person exiting a suspicious vehicle in Northeast D.C. The suspect fled on foot, eventually jumping onto Interstate 295 and discarding a gun into a storm drain before escaping on a motorcycle. While officers were attempting to recover the firearm, it accidentally discharged, striking Officer David.

Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll spoke on behalf of the department, praising Officer David’s dedication and sacrifice. “Wayne is a true hero to the District of Columbia, and today he gave his life to serve the visitors and the residents here,” Carroll said. “We will never forget that.”

The suspect responsible for discarding the weapon remains at large, and authorities are actively searching for leads. Officer David’s death has deeply affected his colleagues, friends, and family, who are now grieving the loss of a dedicated officer who spent more than 25 years serving his community.

The DC Metropolitan Police Department continues to investigate the incident as they honor the memory of Investigator Wayne David, whose commitment to public safety will be remembered by all who knew him.
