Dallas man accused of killing father on air mattress in early morning stabbing

A 29-year-old man is facing a murder charge after police say he fatally stabbed his father while the older man slept inside an east Dallas apartment.

DALLAS, TX – Adrian Mendoza was arrested Wednesday morning after he allegedly called 911 and confessed to killing his father, Samuel Mendoza, inside an apartment on Peavy Road, according to the Dallas Police Department. Officers arrived shortly after 7 a.m., where they encountered the suspect, took him into custody, and began investigating the scene.

Inside the apartment, first responders located the victim lying on an air mattress with multiple stab wounds. Dallas Fire-Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene, police said.

Crime scene findings and arrest details

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by CBS News, officers recovered a large sheathed combat-style knife from a table that “appeared to have blood on it.” Investigators said the victim suffered multiple stab wounds to the head and neck.

After being read his Miranda rights, Adrian Mendoza agreed to speak with detectives and admitted to the killing. He told investigators he stabbed his father at least four times while the victim was asleep, according to the affidavit.

Statements to police and motive claims

When questioned about his actions, Mendoza allegedly claimed he believed his father was “killing people and hurting kids,” though police said he provided no evidence to support that assertion. He also told investigators he intended to use whatever means necessary to “stop his existence,” according to the charging document.

When pressed further on why he did not contact authorities about those beliefs, Mendoza allegedly stated he “was following what he learned in Duolingo,” the affidavit says.

Mendoza is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $250,000 bond, according to jail records.
