Wilmington, DE – The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred early this morning on I-495 in Wilmington, resulting in the death of one man.

On June 10, 2024, at approximately 2:12 a.m., a white 2020 International HV613 truck tractor, operated by the United States Postal Service, was traveling northbound in the right lane of I-495, north of Edgemoor Road. The truck, which had no trailer attached, was struck by a silver 2009 Nissan Altima traveling in the same direction. For reasons under investigation, the right-side front of the Nissan collided with the left-side rear tires of the USPS truck.

The impact caused the USPS truck to spin towards the eastern edge of the roadway, strike a raised metal guardrail, and overturn down an embankment, coming to rest in the grassy area between I-495 and the railroad tracks. The Nissan then struck the guardrail along the right shoulder before stopping in the northbound lanes of I-495.

The USPS truck driver, a 59-year-old man from Yeadon, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification. The Nissan driver, a 31-year-old man from Middletown, Delaware, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately seven hours for investigation and clearance.
