Destiny USA mall reopens after threat leads to temporary closure

December 27, 2024

SYRACUSE, NY — Destiny USA, one of the largest malls in New York, reopened Friday following a temporary closure prompted by a specific and actionable threat, authorities said.

Police reported Friday night that a suspect has been taken into custody as a result of their investigation.

The Syracuse Police Department was alerted to the threat early Friday morning and immediately worked with local, state, and federal partners, as well as Destiny USA management, to assess the situation. Officials determined that the threat warranted suspending mall operations to ensure public safety.

Following an investigation, police confirmed that an individual was taken into custody without incident. Authorities have since declared there is no active threat to the mall.

“The safety and security of visitors, employees, and tenants remains our highest priority,” Syracuse police stated, expressing gratitude to the ownership group at Destiny USA and law enforcement partners for their swift response.

The individual taken into custody was identified as 50-year-old Darrell Anderson Navedo, of Syracuse. Navedo was arrested and charged with one count of Making a Terroristic Threat.

The mall has since resumed normal operations, bringing the situation to a safe conclusion for the community.
