Distraction Theft on East 17 Street, Brooklyn

On Friday, July 5, 2024, a cunning theft occurred at approximately 12:44 PM in front of 1637 East 17 Street, Brooklyn. A 63-year-old woman became the victim of a distraction theft while she was inside her vehicle. An unidentified individual approached her, claiming she had dropped something outside her vehicle. When she exited to check, a second individual seized the opportunity to steal her purse from inside the car.

The stolen purse contained her cellphone, credit cards, and approximately $6,000 in cash. Following the theft, both individuals fled on foot heading northbound on East 17 Street. Fortunately, the victim did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

The New York City Police Department is investigating the case and seeking any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of the individuals involved. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the local authorities.
