Distressed Seal Pup Rescued in Monmouth Beach

March 21, 2024

MONMOUTH BEACH, NJ – A young grey seal pup found in distress at 65 Ocean Avenue, Monmouth Beach, is now under the care of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC). The pup, discovered on March 18th, exhibited signs of respiratory distress, including wheezing and nasal discharge, prompting a swift response from MMSC volunteers and technicians.

Upon arrival at the MMSC facility, the seal began receiving supportive care, including tube feeding a specialized formula mixed with electrolytes. The medical team has initiated treatment for what appears to be a respiratory infection. Weighing in at 50 lbs, the male pup is now comfortably housed in Tub 8 of the Quonset Hut, with staff assist-feeding him fish as part of his recovery process.

The MMSC extends its gratitude to the community for its ongoing support, which enables the center to provide necessary medical care to marine mammals like this seal pup. Donations to the MMSC during the seal season are crucial in supporting the rescue and rehabilitation efforts that give these animals a second chance at life in the wild.
