June 24, 2024

CUMBERLAND, MD—A manufactured home in Cumberland caught fire yesterday afternoon at 3:28 PM, with authorities now investigating the blaze. The fire, reported at 14103 Canal Road SE, caused significant damage to both the structure and its contents.

James and Penny McMillan, the occupants of the home, were affected by the incident. One resident was sent to the hospital as a precaution, and an EMS provider also required hospitalization due to heat-related issues. The home, valued at an estimated $15,000, and contents worth $5,000 were destroyed.

Officials noted that there were no smoke alarms or fire sprinkler systems in the home. The fire was eventually controlled within 10 minutes by the District 16 Volunteer Fire Department, which deployed 35 firefighters to manage the situation.

The fire originated in a bedroom and is believed to have been caused by a malfunctioning window air conditioning unit. This incident has been classified as accidental.

In the aftermath, the American Red Cross along with family members are assisting the McMillans. Tragically, a dog and cat also perished in the fire.
