BRICK, N.J. — Donovan Catholic overcame three interceptions of its own, forced three through the air and scored the deciding touchdown in the fourth quarter to defeat Brick Memorial, 14-7, on Sept. 11 at Brick Memorial High School.
Kahden Davis’ 2-yard touchdown run and Sal Reynoso’s extra point broke a 7-7 tie in the fourth quarter as Donovan Catholic improved to 3-0. Brick Memorial fell to 2-1 despite getting 141 rushing yards from Colin Schoellkopf.
Neither team scored in the first quarter before Donovan Catholic took the lead on Alex Staten’s 2-yard touchdown run in the second. Reynoso added the extra point for a 7-0 halftime advantage.
Brick Memorial answered in the third quarter. Tyler Pierce connected with Schoellkopf for an 11-yard touchdown, and Jack Marotta’s extra point tied the game at 7.
Davis then put Donovan Catholic back in front with his 2-yard run in the fourth, accounting for the only points of the final quarter.
The defenses kept either offense from finding much room throughout the game. Donovan Catholic finished with 123 yards of reported offense, including 84 rushing, while Brick Memorial totaled 234.
Davis led Donovan Catholic on the ground with 51 yards on eight carries. He completed 6 of 14 passes for 39 yards but was intercepted three times. Torrence Turner led the receivers with two catches for 21 yards.
Schoellkopf handled the bulk of Brick Memorial’s ground game, carrying 35 times for 141 yards. Pierce completed 11 of 22 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown but threw three interceptions. Joe Livio caught four passes for 46 yards.
