Driver in fatal hit-and-run crash on Route 37 captured near barrier island

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A reported fatal hit-and-run crash on Route 37 near Aqua Blue in Toms River led to a manhunt Saturday evening, ending with the suspect’s capture on the barrier island and their transport to Toms River Police Headquarters.

The crash, which involved a motor vehicle accident near the Mathis Bridge, was first reported by Jersey Coast Emergency News. Emergency personnel responded quickly to the scene where one individual was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the suspect fled the crash site in a gray Infiniti. Law enforcement units located the vehicle and the driver on the barrier island shortly after the incident. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is currently in custody of the Toms River Police Department.

“There is no further threat to the community,” police said.

Motorists were advised to avoid Route 37 near Aqua Blue as crews remained on scene conducting the investigation and clearing debris. No other injuries were reported in the incident.

The crash occurred outside the Barnegat Bay waterfront restaurant, Aqua Blu.

Police have not yet released further details about the victim or any pending charges.

A fatal hit-and-run on Route 37 ended with the suspect’s arrest and no ongoing threat to the public. One lane on Route 37 eastbound remains closed and traffic is heavy near the scene.
