E-bike rider critically injured after crossing into traffic on Degraw Avenue in Teaneck

TEANECK, NJ – A 22-year-old Fort Lee man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while riding an e-bike on Degraw Avenue in Teaneck on Monday evening, according to a statement from the Teaneck Police Department.

The collision occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. near Frank W. Burr Boulevard on the eastbound side of Degraw Avenue, just before the Interstate 95 South entrance ramp. Emergency responders were initially alerted to a possible motorcycle crash. Upon arrival, officers determined the incident involved an e-bike and a single motor vehicle, not a motorcycle as initially reported.

The e-bike rider was found unconscious but breathing and appeared to have sustained life-threatening injuries. Officers immediately performed life-saving measures and were joined by the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Holy Name Medical Center Advanced Life Support, and the Teaneck Fire Department.

He was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

The vehicle involved was driven by a 20-year-old Teaneck woman, who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. She was the only occupant of the car, held a valid driver’s license, and was not injured. A witness who saw the crash also stayed at the scene and helped block traffic until first responders arrived.

According to a preliminary investigation, the e-bike operator had been traveling along the center median of Degraw Avenue before attempting to cross the eastbound lanes and was struck by a vehicle traveling in the center lane. No summonses have been issued as of Tuesday, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Identification responded to document the scene, and eastbound lanes were temporarily closed during emergency operations and the on-site investigation.

Police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the Teaneck Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Bergen Crime Stoppers.

Officials emphasized that e-bike riders must follow the same traffic laws as motorists and shared safety reminders, including using designated bike lanes, avoiding sudden lane changes, and wearing protective gear.
