Cambridge driver dies after live wires fall during violent crash

Cambridge man electrocuted after crashing truck into utility pole and porch

CAMBRIDGE, MD – A 44-year-old man from Cambridge was killed Monday night after crashing his pickup truck into a porch and utility pole, which caused downed live wires that are believed to have electrocuted him, according to Cambridge Police.

Officers responded at approximately 7:45 p.m. on December 8 to the 600 block of Locust Street for a report of a vehicle that had struck a structure. When they arrived, they found a red pickup truck that had collided with the front porch of a home. A utility pole had been split in half and was lying in the street with live electrical wires hanging across the scene.

Roughly 25 feet away from the crash site, officers located a man lying unresponsive on the sidewalk. He was later identified as Armond Hayward III, 44, of Cambridge. Witnesses at the scene and initial observations led authorities to believe Hayward had been electrocuted by contact with the energized wires. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Delmarva Power responded to address the electrical hazard, and other emergency personnel assisted in securing the area. No other injuries were reported.

The circumstances leading up to the crash are still under investigation, and police have not yet released further details on what may have caused Hayward to lose control of the vehicle.
