Edison Man Receives Five-Year Sentence for Fatal Crash in Piscataway

July 24, 2024

Piscataway, NJ – Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Deputy Chief Michelle Pilch of the Piscataway Police Department announced the sentencing of 20-year-old Ahmadsabir Ashaq of Edison in connection with a fatal crash that occurred last year.

On June 3, 2023, at approximately 1:41 A.M., Piscataway authorities responded to a severe motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Stelton Road and Mindy Lane. Ashaq, driving a Lexus sedan, was involved in a high-speed collision with a Ford Focus driven by 24-year-old Shailesh Gurrapu of Carteret. The crash resulted in the Ford Focus catching fire and Gurrapu being pronounced deceased at the scene. Ashaq and a passenger in his Lexus were hospitalized for their injuries.

Investigations led by Patrolman William Kloos and Detective James Alleva revealed that Ashaq was traveling at speeds in excess of 110 miles per hour just seconds before the collision.

On March 28, 2024, Ashaq pled guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide. He was sentenced on July 19, 2024, by Judge Sheree V. Pitchford to five years in New Jersey State Prison under the No Early Release Act (NERA), requiring him to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before eligibility for parole. Following his prison term, Ashaq will be under parole supervision for three years.
