JACKSON-The Jackson Municipal Utilities Authority, which manages the city water supply for the township notified residents about a problem with the authority’s water treatment facilities that could put the elderly, infants and pregnant women at risk.
The problem, which occurred nearly a month ago, on February 6th happened, according to the MUA by a malfunctioning chlorination pump. That pump, according to the MUA was fixed the next day.
“Our water system recently violated a drinking water treatment requirement,” the MUA said in a statement. “Although this incident was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct the situation.”
The MUA released the bulletin nearly one month after the incident took place. It is not clear if the MUA attempted to conceal the incident until forced to by regulating authorities.
“On 2/6/2020, we did not meet one or more of our treatment requirements to provide sufficient levels of disinfectant and the required monitoring of the disinfectant levels due to the malfunction chlorine pumping equipment,” the MUA said.
“If you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant, are pregnant or elderly, you may be at increased risk and should seek advice from your healthcare providers about drinking this water,” the statement continued.
The MUA said the threats posed include bacteria, viruses and parasites which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea and associated headaches.
Testing by the MUA after the pumps were fixed came back negative, according to the MUA.
