Spotsylvania woman claims $2M Powerball prize on ticket bought at Weis Market
Spotsylvania, VA — A Spotsylvania County woman is now $2 million richer after claiming a top Powerball prize from the August 27 drawing, Virginia Lottery officials confirmed.
The winner, who chose to remain anonymous under state law, purchased her ticket at Weis Market located at 9801 Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania. Her ticket matched the first five winning numbers — 9, 12, 22, 41, and 61 — missing only the Powerball number 25.
Normally, that combination would have won $1 million, but she added the Power Play® option for an extra dollar. The multiplier doubled her prize to $2 million.
The retailer also benefits: Weis Market will receive a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. The odds of hitting the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, while the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 25.
All Virginia Lottery profits support K-12 public education. Spotsylvania County received more than $19.7 million in Lottery funds for schools in the last fiscal year. Statewide, the Lottery contributed more than $901 million, accounting for about 10 percent of the total K-12 budget.
