Fatal Collision in Laurel Under Investigation

June 3, 2024

Laurel, MD — The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Saturday in the unincorporated section of Laurel. The deceased driver has been identified as 23-year-old Justin Xavier Smith of Upper Marlboro.

On June 1, 2024, at approximately 7:15 p.m., officers responded to a four-vehicle collision in the 11000 block of Laurel Bowie Road. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in a second car is in critical condition, while the driver and passengers of a third vehicle were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of the fourth vehicle were uninjured.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Smith and the driver of a second car were traveling southbound on Laurel Bowie Road. For reasons still under investigation, Smith crossed the double yellow line into the northbound lanes, struck a guardrail, and ultimately collided with a northbound vehicle. Concurrently, the second southbound vehicle lost control, left the roadway, and struck a tree. Debris from Smith’s car also hit another vehicle.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit at 301-731-4422.
