Fatal Shooting in Weehawken Under Investigation; Suspect Apprehended

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. — The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, in collaboration with the Weehawken Police Department, is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Thursday evening, August 15, on Park Avenue in Weehawken.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 7 p.m. in the area between 37th and 41st Streets. Upon arrival, they discovered 24-year-old Jhonnier Gamboa Acosta suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Acosta was immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:14 p.m.

The exact cause of death will be determined by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office following their examination.

During the initial investigation, authorities quickly apprehended a suspect identified as 67-year-old Juan Perez. The arrest was made with the assistance of officers from both Union City and Weehawken.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting. No further details have been released at this time.
