Former Correctional Officer Faces Expanded Charges for Sexual Abuse at FCI Dublin

July 27, 2024

DUBLIN, CA – A federal grand jury issued a superseding indictment against Darrell Wayne Smith, a former correctional officer at Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin, charging him with 15 counts of sexual abuse and a civil rights violation involving five female inmates.

This updated indictment, issued yesterday, builds on initial charges from April 13, 2023, where Smith was accused of illegal sexual conduct with three inmates. The new indictment identifies two additional victims and extends the timeline of the alleged abuses back to August 2016.

Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco emphasized the commitment of the Department of Justice to addressing sexual assault within the Bureau of Prisons and holding perpetrators accountable. U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey and DOJ Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz echoed this commitment, highlighting the seriousness of the charges and the importance of humane treatment for inmates.

The added charges include two additional counts of sexual abuse and a federal civil rights violation, indicating aggravated sexual abuse. Smith, now residing in Florida, is alleged to have committed these acts while in a position of authority at the facility, exploiting his custodial and disciplinary control over the victims.
