Former Cuban intelligence officer arrested for immigration fraud in Florida

MIAMI — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a 71-year-old Cuban national in Florida for allegedly obtaining legal status in the U.S. through fraudulent means, officials announced Thursday.

Tomas Emilio Hernandez Cruz, of West Park, was taken into custody at his residence following an investigation by ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the FBI. Authorities said he misrepresented his background when applying for Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) status.

The investigation, launched in September 2023, uncovered inconsistencies in Hernandez Cruz’s immigration application. Officials determined he had held various high-level positions within Cuban intelligence but concealed his affiliation with the Cuban Communist Party to mislead U.S. authorities.

“Hernandez Cruz knowingly and willfully withheld his true position and profession,” ICE stated, adding that the deception was intended to fraudulently obtain legal residency.

Following his arrest, Hernandez Cruz was processed and remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
