PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A former Pittsburgh high school basketball standout who built a professional career overseas is now in custody after authorities say he accumulated more than $100,000 in unpaid child support and spent years avoiding court proceedings. DeAndre Kane, 36, was arrested Friday at Pittsburgh International Airport after returning from Iceland, where he currently resides and plays professional basketball.
The arrest ends a fugitive case that dates back to 2023, when Kane allegedly failed to appear for a Family Court hearing related to missed child support payments.
Airport Arrest Ends Years as Fugitive
Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin M. Kraus announced the arrest Saturday, saying detectives developed information that Kane would be arriving in Pittsburgh on a flight from Iceland.
Investigators from the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office worked with the Allegheny County Police Department and the U.S. Department of State to confirm Kane’s travel plans.
Authorities intercepted Kane as he exited his flight at Pittsburgh International Airport.
The arrest marks a dramatic turn for a player once celebrated in the city’s basketball community. Kane led Schenley High School to a City League basketball championship in 2008 before eventually pursuing a professional career overseas.
International Basketball Career Meets Family Court Case
According to the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, Kane has played professionally for various international teams since 2014.
Officials said he became a fugitive in 2023 after failing to appear for a Family Court hearing involving child support obligations.
While authorities did not disclose details about the underlying support order, they said Kane owes more than $100,000 in unpaid child support.
“Detectives from our office this week, with the assistance of the Allegheny County Police Department and the United States Department of State, developed information that Kane would be returning to Pittsburgh Friday from Iceland,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
After taking Kane into custody at the airport, deputies transported him to the Allegheny County Jail.

High-Profile Arrest Draws Attention
Kane’s name remains familiar to many Pittsburgh basketball fans because of his role in Schenley’s successful championship run nearly two decades ago.
His professional career took him overseas, where he has competed for multiple teams since 2014. Investigators said his international residence complicated efforts to bring him before the court.
The involvement of federal and local agencies helped authorities track Kane’s return to the United States and coordinate the airport arrest.
Cases involving large unpaid child support balances can result in warrants, court sanctions and incarceration when individuals fail to comply with court orders or appear for hearings.
Kane is expected to remain in custody pending a hearing in Allegheny County Family Court. Court proceedings will determine the next steps regarding the outstanding child support case and his legal status.
