Frederick player hits big after cashing in smaller ticket
Frederick, MD — A Maryland lottery player turned a routine visit to cash in a smaller prize into a six-figure win after purchasing additional scratch-off tickets.
The Frederick resident, who regularly plays high-value scratch-off games, had recently won $200 and stopped at a Shell station in Mount Airy to redeem the ticket and try again.
He purchased four scratch-offs along with draw game tickets and later checked them at home. After scanning several tickets, the final one revealed a $100,000 top prize on the $100,000 Ca$h game.
The winner said he initially overlooked the message on his phone before realizing the significance and scanning the ticket again to confirm the result.
Lottery officials noted the player has had previous success, including a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 win in 2017.
He claimed the prize April 20 and said he plans to pay off bills, save for emergencies, and possibly purchase a vehicle.
The winning ticket was sold at the Mount Airy Shell on Lake View Drive. The retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the top-prize ticket.
The $100,000 Ca$h game launched with 65 top prizes, with dozens still remaining.
