Brookland shooting suspect arrested in Maryland more than two months after deadly attack
Washington, DC – A 32-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in Germantown, Maryland, and charged in the August shooting death of a woman found inside a Brookland residence, more than two months after the midday killing stunned a Northeast DC neighborhood.
The fatal shooting occurred on Wednesday, August 13, just after 11 a.m., when officers responded to the 3300 block of 15th Street NE. Inside the home, police found 36-year-old Mignon Brown-Massey suffering from gunshot wounds. She was unconscious but still breathing at the scene and was rushed to a hospital, where she later died despite emergency medical efforts.
On Tuesday, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force tracked down and arrested Darryn Bynum Jr., 32, in Germantown. He was transported to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch and charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed under a D.C. Superior Court warrant.
Investigators have not released a motive or details about the connection between Bynum and Brown-Massey. The shooting happened in broad daylight in a residential section of Northeast, just blocks from Rhode Island Avenue, triggering concerns from residents about violence in the area.
The arrest follows weeks of investigative work spanning jurisdictions, leading to Bynum’s capture in suburban Montgomery County.
Brown-Massey’s killing added to a wave of violent incidents that hit parts of Northeast DC during the summer months. Her death marked one of several homicides under investigation in the Fifth District.
Bynum remains in custody as the case moves through the court system.
