Prosecutors are asking for the public’s help locating a Jersey City man charged with murder and multiple attempted murder counts following a deadly weekend shooting.
Jersey City, NJ – The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is searching for a Jersey City man charged in connection with a fatal shooting that left one person dead and another wounded early Sunday morning.
Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced that 36-year-old Raheem Rhett, of Jersey City, has been charged with murder, three counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, multiple weapons offenses, and certain persons not to possess a firearm.
Fatal shooting remains under investigation
Police responded at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday after reports of gunfire on Orient Avenue near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Officers found 38-year-old Jenardo Tejada, of Jersey City, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Tejada was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Authorities said the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death.
During the investigation, officers also located a 45-year-old Jersey City man on Jackson Square with an apparent gunshot wound. Officials did not immediately release an update on his condition.
Authorities urge public not to approach suspect
Investigators have charged Rhett with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, and certain persons not to possess a firearm.
“The defendant should not be approached and anyone with information regarding Rhett’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor,” the prosecutor’s office said.
Anyone with information about Rhett’s location is asked to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office at 201-915-1345 or submit an anonymous tip at hcpo.org/tips. Authorities said all information will be kept confidential.
The charges are accusations, and Rhett is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
