Gaithersburg Business Owner Faces Assault Charges

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Jose Melvin Mendoza, 56, the owner of Passion Bakery Café in Silver Spring, has been charged with multiple counts of assault following an investigation by the Montgomery County Department of Police. The allegations involve inappropriate conduct during business hours at the bakery located on the 2200 block of Bel Pre Road.

The Fourth District – Patrol Investigations Unit launched an investigation after receiving complaints from several victims who claimed they were inappropriately touched by Mendoza while at the bakery. This led to the issuance of an arrest warrant and Mendoza’s subsequent arrest.

Mendoza faces 13 counts of second-degree assault, two counts of fourth-degree sex offense involving sexual contact, and one count of fourth-degree sex offense by a person in a position of authority. He has been released on an unsecured personal bond.

Detectives are concerned there may be more victims and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips leading to an arrest could be eligible for a reward ranging from $250 to $10,000.
