MIDDLETOWN, N.J. — A 54-year-old woman is facing multiple charges after police say she drove recklessly and came dangerously close to hitting a group of Girl Scouts who were selling cookies in a local neighborhood.
Susan Santos was taken into custody on Wednesday, July 17, and is currently being held at the Monmouth County Jail in Freehold, according to Middletown Police. She is charged with endangering another person, endangering the welfare of a child, and reckless driving.
Police say the charges stem from a traffic complaint involving a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Investigators allege that Santos was behind the wheel and nearly struck several children during the incident.
The case was made with assistance from local residents who reported the incident and shared key details with investigators.
Middletown Police Chief R. Craig Weber credited the community for helping advance the investigation, noting, “The extraordinary relationship and level of cooperation we enjoy with the public often proves to be a critical component in our ability to keep Middletown safe.”
No injuries were reported in connection with the near-miss.
