GOP Concerned Over Financial Fall Out in Murphy’s Failed Wind Energy Projects

November 1, 2023

TRENTON, NJ – Assembly Republicans are calling on Governor Phil Murphy to disclose the amount of taxpayer money spent on now-defunct offshore wind projects by Danish company Orsted. The demand comes in the form of a letter sent to the governor, questioning his administration’s credibility and competence.

The letter, dated November 1, asks for a detailed account of the state’s financial involvement with Orsted. It requests information on grants, loans, tax credits, or any other financial assistance provided to the company.

Murphy had previously approved a roughly $1 billion federal tax credit waiver for Orsted in July. The terminated projects, known as Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2, were expected to provide 2,200 megawatts of energy to approximately 500,000 New Jersey homes.

The Assembly Republicans’ letter raises concerns about the financial impact of the failed projects on New Jersey taxpayers and calls for accountability from the Murphy administration. It concludes by questioning the governor’s decision to prioritize a foreign company over New Jersey residents.
