Grand jury review to follow fatal police shooting in Berlin Township

A man was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon during a law enforcement encounter involving New Jersey State Police detectives assigned to a federal fugitive task force, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

The shooting took place in the West Berlin section of Berlin Township, Camden County, at approximately 2:13 p.m. on July 29. Two detectives from the New Jersey State Police, working with the U.S. Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, encountered the man near Haddon Avenue and Bate Avenue during an ongoing investigation.

According to the preliminary report, one of the detectives discharged his service weapon during the encounter, striking the man. A revolver was recovered at the scene.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was provided with first aid at the location and transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead.

The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is investigating the incident, as required under New Jersey law for any death involving law enforcement. The case will be presented to a grand jury for review.
