GREENBELT, MD — The General Services Administration (GSA) has announced the selection of Greenbelt, Prince George’s County, as the site for the new Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Headquarters. This decision concludes an extensive, decade-long GSA procurement process, marking Greenbelt as the ideal location for the FBI due to its cost-effectiveness, readiness for immediate construction, and transportation accessibility, including an on-site metro stop.
The move is expected to bring significant economic benefits and change the local economy for generations. It aligns with the GSA’s goal to rebalance federal jobs in the region and promote equitable spending on federal investments. Currently, Prince George’s County is home to approximately 135,000 federal workers, but hosts only 4% of the region’s federal jobs. The county aims to increase this to at least 10%, which would mean adding more than 40,000 jobs for county residents.
The relocation of the FBI Headquarters to Greenbelt will directly bring 7,500 federal jobs to Prince George’s County, in addition to jobs for contractors associated with the FBI. This move is seen as an opportunity to attract other federal agencies and new companies in sectors critical to the FBI’s mission, such as technology and cybersecurity.
To support this move, the State has committed $200M over FY 2023 and FY 2024 for infrastructure improvements. This development is part of the broader growth along the Blue Line Corridor, aimed at bringing jobs that offer both security and economic development to the region. County Executive Angela Alsobrooks highlighted the county’s strong STEM research ecosystem and university pipeline as key factors in supporting the FBI’s mission and fostering growth in Prince George’s County.
