Greensville County, Va. — A Greensville County sheriff’s deputy suffered a gunshot wound Thursday morning after responding to a domestic disturbance on Fiddlers Road, where an armed man later died inside the home following an exchange of gunfire with deputies, according to the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting unfolded around 5:16 a.m. May 14 after deputies responded to a reported domestic incident at the residence. Investigators said the suspect briefly left the property before returning while deputies remained on scene. Outside the home, the man pulled out a handgun and exchanged shots with deputies before retreating back inside the residence.
The wounded deputy was transported to VCU Medical Center and remained in stable condition Thursday, Sheriff W.T. Jarratt Jr.’s office said. A 10-year-old child inside the home was not injured.
Gunfire Erupts After Suspect Returns to Scene
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies heard another gunshot after the suspect went back into the house. Law enforcement officers later entered the residence and found the man dead inside.
Officials have not released the identities of the deputy or the deceased man. Authorities also have not said how many deputies fired their weapons during the confrontation.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Chesapeake Field Office will lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting at the request of the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office.
