Gunfire Erupts in Quiet Affluent Jersey Shore Community in Overnight Police Involved Shooting

RUMSON, N.J. — The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred early this morning in Rumson, Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced Friday.

A 27-year-old male from Newark was shot by a Fair Haven Police Officer and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His identity has not been released.

The incident occurred just before 4:45 a.m. on Friday, September 6, when officers from the Rumson Police Department and nearby towns responded to reports of suspected burglaries in the area of Avenue of Two Rivers South and Shrewsbury Drive. During the response, a Fair Haven officer encountered two suspects in a moving vehicle and fired his service weapon, striking one of the vehicle’s occupants.

The officer involved was uninjured but was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Prosecutor Santiago addressed misinformation circulating online, urging the public to refrain from speculation until the investigation is complete. “I have every confidence that our detectives will continue to investigate this incident in a meticulous and objective manner,” Santiago said.

Police did not provide any further details.

The investigation is being conducted in compliance with New Jersey’s law regarding independent investigations into police use-of-force incidents. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Joseph Pahopin or Detective Michael Donovan at 800-533-7443.
