Virginia man wins $100K Powerball prize after playing for $1.8B jackpot
Stafford, VA — A Midland man didn’t hit the record-setting $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot, but his ticket still paid off big—earning him a $100,000 win in the September 6 drawing thanks to a simple $1 upgrade.
Edward McKeown purchased his ticket at the Wawa located at 1172 Garrisonville Road in Stafford, opting for Easy Pick and letting the computer randomly generate his numbers. The next morning, after returning home from church, he checked his numbers and discovered he had matched four of the five white balls plus the red Powerball number.
That match would typically result in a $50,000 prize, but McKeown had added the Power Play® option for an additional dollar, which doubled his winnings to $100,000.
The winning numbers drawn on September 6 were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, with the Powerball number 17.
McKeown told officials he may use part of the prize money toward his honeymoon.
The odds of matching all six numbers to win the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25. Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m.
All Virginia Lottery profits benefit K-12 education. McKeown lives in Fauquier County, which received over $4.5 million in Lottery funds last fiscal year. In total, the Virginia Lottery contributed more than $901 million to public education in Fiscal Year 2025, making up roughly 10 percent of the state’s K-12 education budget.
