There have been reports of an increase in prostitution and related issues in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district, particularly in areas of Queens, such as Roosevelt Avenue. Local activists and business owners have expressed concerns over the growing presence of illegal sex work, much of which seems to involve vulnerable migrants.
These women, often dressed scantily, are reportedly working the streets at all hours, soliciting passersby, while their “pimps” instill fear in the local community.
Prostitution in this area appears to have spiked after being pushed out of nearby Flushing, leading to an increase in crime and a declining quality of life for residents. Despite some raids by the NYPD earlier in 2023, which temporarily shut down several brothels, many feel that the efforts have been insufficient.
A video released by Jonathan Choe highlights the gravity of the situation on the ground.
Critics, like activist Curtis Sliwa, claim that law enforcement has not taken the necessary steps to arrest those responsible, and these operations quickly resume.
Community members have also criticized Ocasio-Cortez, stating that she has been largely absent from the area amidst these issues. While she did participate in a rally in August 2023 calling for more legal support for street vendors, locals feel she has not done enough to address the escalating prostitution problem.
Plans for more organized community action are already underway, as residents push for greater government intervention.
