Illegal U Turn Ends in 80 MPH Chase Handcuffs

Stafford, VA – A Stafford man was taken into custody after leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit that began with an illegal U-turn and ended in a multi-vehicle crash near the I-95 northbound on-ramp.
The driver reportedly reached speeds exceeding 80 miles per hour in a 45 zone while attempting to evade law enforcement.

No injuries were reported in the collision.

According to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred Wednesday when Deputy Helbing observed a vehicle blocking traffic while trying to make an illegal U-turn on Warrenton Road.

As the deputy approached, the driver completed the U-turn, prompting Helbing to activate his emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop.

Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated, weaving through traffic and refusing to pull over. Authorities said the vehicle ran a red light while attempting another U-turn before crashing into two vehicles near the I-95 northbound on-ramp.

Deputies identified the driver as Joshua Burton, 30, of Stafford. He was detained at the scene following the crash.

Multiple charges filed

Burton was charged with felony eluding, driving with a suspended license, making an illegal U-turn, operating an unregistered vehicle, and driving without insurance.

Officials confirmed Burton is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office reported that no injuries occurred as a result of the pursuit or crash.
