Infant’s 7 broken ribs lead to aggravated assault charges against Pennsylvania babysitter

Police say a 3-month-old child suffered multiple fractures and bruising while in the care of a New Kensington woman

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — A New Kensington woman is facing felony charges after investigators said a 3-month-old infant suffered seven broken ribs and other injuries that medical professionals determined were consistent with physical abuse.

According to New Kensington Police, detectives received a ChildLine report in January regarding suspected abuse involving an infant.

Investigators and Children’s Bureau caseworkers later interviewed Alexzandrea Derry, 24, at her residence in New Kensington.

Police said Derry told investigators she had been caring for the child for two nights in January.

According to court documents, Derry reported that she slipped while attempting to put the child down early one morning, causing the infant to fall and strike a box spring and the floor.

She told investigators she later noticed red marks on the child’s ribs and head but believed the infant had not suffered serious injuries.

Derry also reported a second incident in which she allegedly tripped while carrying the infant and a baby swing upstairs, falling forward into a cabinet.

According to police, the child continued crying and was eventually taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Medical professionals determined the infant had suffered seven fractured ribs and facial bruising.

Police said medical reports concluded the injuries were diagnostic of physical abuse.

Investigators also noted that Derry underwent drug testing during the investigation and tested positive for THC and cocaine.

Following the investigation, Derry was charged with aggravated assault of a victim less than 6 years old and endangering the welfare of children.

The charges are allegations, and Derry is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
