Loaded AR-15-style weapon seized during roadside investigation
HOWELL, N.J. — What began as a routine traffic stop on Interstate 195 ended with two arrests after officers allegedly discovered a loaded privately made AR-15-style “ghost gun” and learned one of the vehicle’s occupants was wanted on an outstanding warrant, authorities said.
According to police, Patrolman Trent Powers stopped a vehicle on Interstate 195 at approximately 11:02 p.m. on Aug. 3 after observing a traffic violation.
During the investigation, officers identified front-seat passenger Jarrone Perry, 47, of Jackson, and determined he was wanted on an active Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office warrant for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender. Perry was taken into custody without incident.
Police said Brick Township Police K-9 Officer LaPoint and K-9 Rebel responded to assist with the investigation. After conducting a free-air sniff, the K-9 alerted to the presence of suspected narcotics or other contraband inside the vehicle.
A subsequent search led officers to recover a loaded, privately manufactured AR-15-style firearm, commonly referred to as a ghost gun, according to police.
Perry and the driver, 18-year-old Christopher Ojeda Jr. of Toms River, were each charged with possession of an unserialized firearm, possession of hollow-point ammunition, possession of an assault firearm, unlawful possession of a rifle and unlawful possession of a loaded firearm.
Perry also faces an additional charge of certain persons not to have weapons.
Both men were processed under New Jersey’s Criminal Justice Reform Act and transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution.
The charges are allegations. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
