Interstate 95 Safety Initiative Yields 500 Citations in Virginia and North Carolina

RICHMOND, VA – A joint safety initiative titled “Operation Safe DRIVE” was conducted by the Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety Unit (MCSU) in collaboration with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, focusing on commercial vehicle safety along Interstate 95.

The operation, which ran from May 21 to May 23, 2024, spanned from Fairfax, Virginia, into North Carolina.

Throughout the operation, MCSU troopers and other law enforcement units concentrated on monitoring and addressing violations involving commercial vehicles.

Nearly 400 commercial vehicles were inspected during the three-day effort, aiming to enhance road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.

The operation resulted in the issuance of over 500 citations, predominantly to drivers of non-commercial vehicles. Specific infractions included 62 citations for speeding, 56 for reckless driving, and 34 for following too closely.

Additionally, as part of the outreach during “Operation Safe DRIVE,” Virginia State Police troopers distributed educational materials aimed at raising awareness about human trafficking, further underscoring the dual focus on safety and community education during the enforcement initiative.
