Isiah Kiner-Falefa Signs Two-Year Deal with Blue Jays, Stays in AL East

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – Former New York Yankees free agent Isiah Kiner-Falefa has signed a deal with the Toronto BlueJays.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s move to the Toronto Blue Jays marks a significant transition in his career, as he stays within the American League East. After a challenging tenure with the New York Yankees, where he faced criticism for his performance as the everyday shortstop, particularly in 2022, Kiner-Falefa now finds a new opportunity with the Blue Jays.

During his time with the Yankees, Kiner-Falefa struggled with fielding and did not produce enough offensively (.642 OPS in 2022) to offset these issues. His difficulties led to him being benched during the postseason. However, in 2023, repositioned as a super utility player, he seemed to regain his footing. His versatility was on full display, as he played every position except catcher and first base, proving especially useful in center field, a position of need for the Yankees.

Despite the Yankees’ overall disappointing season, Kiner-Falefa’s performance stood out. He contributed more significantly than many of his teammates, enhancing his appeal to other teams looking for a player with his defensive flexibility. With his new two-year, $15 million deal with the Blue Jays, pending a physical as Jon Heyman of The Post reported, Kiner-Falefa is set to fill the utility role left vacant by free agent Whit Merrifield. This move could prove beneficial for both Kiner-Falefa and the Blue Jays, offering him a fresh start and the team a versatile and experienced player.
