TEMPLE HILLS, Md. — A retired government worker from Temple Hills turned $20 and a lucky quarter into a $50,000 prize on the new Lucky 777 scratch-off, Maryland Lottery officials confirmed Thursday.
The win came just 10 days after the game launched. The Prince George’s County resident, inspired by a $1 million winner in another state, decided to switch up his usual Pick 3-4-5 play and visit Marlow Wings at 4147 Branch Avenue to try the new scratch-off game.
Using what he called his “lucky quarter,” the winner uncovered the “7 autowin” symbol 25 times on a single ticket. Among the prize amounts revealed were two $10,000 wins, three $5,000 prizes, and 14 $1,000 hits. The final total added up to the game’s second-tier prize of $50,000.
“I just kept seeing the symbol pop up,” the winner told Lottery officials. “It didn’t stop.”
He said he plans to share some of the money with family and invest the rest.
Lucky 777 is part of a new lineup of tickets ranging from $1 to $20. This is the first of eight $50,000 prizes claimed. One of the six $1 million top prizes was already won on the game’s launch date, May 19.
