Jersey City Recognized for Pedestrian Safety

JERSEY CITY, NJ — The New Jersey Department of Transportation honored Jersey City with the 2023 Complete Streets Excellence and Champion Award for its effective implementation of the Vision Zero Action Plan, significantly enhancing street safety.

Jersey City received recognition for its notable achievement of zero traffic-related deaths in 2022, attributed to prompt interventions at key crash sites under its Vision Zero initiative. The award highlights the city’s comprehensive strategy to create a safer, more inclusive transportation network for all users.

Mayor Steven M. Fulop expressed gratitude for the acknowledgment of Jersey City’s innovative safety measures, which serve as a benchmark for other cities. The accolade underscores Jersey City’s commitment to traffic safety and mobility improvements.

The NJDOT noted Jersey City’s progress in executing over 50 actions from its 77-point plan since adopting Vision Zero, the first in New Jersey to do so. Initiatives included the installation of hundreds of speed humps, traffic restrictions, intersection modifications, and the expansion of protected bike lanes.

Director of the Department of Infrastructure, Barkha Patel, emphasized the city’s focus on a multimodal transportation approach, catering to the high percentage of residents reliant on public transit for commuting.

Jersey City stands among three municipalities in the state to receive the Complete Streets Excellence Awards. NJDOT Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti commended the advancements in statewide Complete Streets policies and their practical applications, celebrating the dedication to making roadways safer for diverse travelers.
