Jersey cops unleash love for furry crimefighters on national dog day

GLOUCESTER TWP, NJ — The streets of South Jersey went to the dogs — literally — as police departments across Gloucester County celebrated National Dog Day by spotlighting their four-legged crime-fighting partners and community companions.

From the loyal Bloodhounds to sharp-nosed Belgian Malinois and community-favorite Rottweilers, the Gloucester Township Police Department gave a social media shoutout on Facebook to its seven K-9 officers: Freya and Harper, Venus and Dixie, and Axel, Ivan, and Jolene. The post, shared Thursday morning, featured the dogs by name, breed, and their roles, celebrating the vital work they perform — from searching for missing persons to offering comfort through community outreach.

The department also tipped its hat to partners like Crisis Response Canines and the Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center, extending the celebration beyond law enforcement to local animal support groups.

Just a short drive away, Monroe Township Police joined the canine tribute on Facebook, recognizing their own K-9 units for their dedication to public safety. The department praised its K-9s for assisting in searches, suspect tracking, and simply being “part of the team,” adding a dose of light-hearted appreciation for the daily belly rubs earned on duty.

National Dog Day, celebrated annually on August 26, recognizes all breeds of dogs and honors those that serve alongside law enforcement, rescue operations, and emotional support programs.
