Off-duty officers stop knife-wielding man after beach attack in Atlantic City
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — A man was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly pulling a knife on an off-duty Atlantic City police lieutenant who intervened to stop a violent encounter on the beach during a 5K memorial run.
Around 10:10 a.m., Lt. James Herbert, while participating in the Seedorf/McMeekin Memorial 5K Run, saw a man later identified as Xontae Glass, 27, holding a woman in a headlock and dragging her toward the underside of the Boardwalk. Herbert intervened, and a nearby runner was asked to call 911 as additional calls came in from other witnesses.
As Herbert followed the pair onto the Boardwalk to await responding officers, a struggle broke out between the lieutenant and Glass, during which the suspect reportedly pulled a pocket knife and threatened him.
Off-duty Northfield Police Captain Scott Pollak, who witnessed the altercation, drew his firearm and ordered Glass to drop the knife. Glass briefly retreated before fleeing the scene on foot, ditching the weapon.
Witnesses helped responding officers track Glass down on the beach block of New York Avenue, where he was hiding. He was taken into custody, but became combative during transport, resulting in Officer Aaron McKim sustaining an injury.
Glass is facing multiple charges, including simple assault, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The incident has drawn praise from Atlantic City Police Chief James Sarkos, who commended both off-duty officers and members of the public for acting swiftly to prevent further harm
