Large explosions expected Wednesday morning in Monmouth County

COLTS NECK, N.J. — The U.S. Navy will conduct explosive ordnance disposal operations at Naval Weapons Station Earle on Wednesday, with controlled detonations scheduled throughout the day, officials confirmed.

Key Points

  • Explosive ordnance operations will occur at NWS Earle on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The drills will involve controlled detonations as part of routine disposal procedures.
  • Nearby residents may hear loud noises but are advised not to be alarmed.

Operations set to begin mid-morning

The exercise is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 2025, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and will take place on the installation’s designated range areas. The activity will include live explosive detonations as part of routine ordnance disposal and training procedures.

“These are standard operations conducted by our EOD team to ensure safe handling and disposal of outdated or unstable munitions,” a Navy official said.

Residents may hear or feel blasts

Authorities have advised nearby residents and communities that loud noises and vibrations may be noticeable during the operation window but are not cause for concern. No off-base impacts are expected.

The Navy conducts these operations periodically to maintain operational readiness and safety standards for all personnel and surrounding areas.

Public urged to avoid range areas

Officials reminded the public to stay clear of designated range areas during the exercise period. No unauthorized personnel are permitted near the blast zones.

The EOD drills are part of ongoing safety protocols conducted at NWS Earle throughout the year.
