LOWER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A 20-year-old suspect faces an attempted murder charge after gunfire was reported near the Mulligan Sports Complex in the Villas section of Lower Township. Police said no one was struck by the bullets.

Officers responded to the area at approximately 10:37 p.m. Aug. 29 following reports of multiple gunshots. An investigation by the Lower Township Police Department Detective Bureau and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit identified Leshaun Davis as the suspect, authorities said.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

Detectives and members of the Cape May County Regional SWAT Team executed a court-authorized search warrant early Aug. 31 at Davis’ residence in Villas. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Lower Township Police Department.

Davis was charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings.

Investigation Remains Active

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland said there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

A conviction for a first-degree crime carries a potential sentence of 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison. The charges are accusations, and Davis is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
